RESOURCES & ENERGY PROGRAM
'Connecting students to resources and energy industry pathways,'
the Resources and Energy Program (REP), is a response to the
current and impending skills shortage for the expansion of the
mining and energy generation sectors.
REP is an initiative of the Federal and State Governments that
gives students practical training in trades where there is a
critical skills shortage, such as engineering, boiler making,
fitting, turning and welding, and automotive. Students work towards
a Certificate III or higher as part of their School Based
Apprenticeship.
Key Points:
• Is a member of the South Australian Resources Workforce
Planning Council and the Regional Resources Workforce Planning
Council.
• Established, enhanced and/or assisted in the maintenance of
Industry Pathway Programs (IPP's) in schools, leading to
apprenticeships/traineeships in the jobs in greatest demand.
• The strategy of the program is guided by the Resources and
Energy Program Advisory Committee (REPAC) which includes the major
players in mining and energy generation and allied industry,
including suppliers.
• The REP with the Industry Skills Program (ISP) will be
running a Careers Promotion Roadshow in May in Port Augusta and
Whyalla, and in July in Port Pirie to demonstrate to students the
types of jobs and the pathways in the different sectors.
• Working with industry to establish training centres in the
Upper Spencer Gulf and Roxby Downs for Certificate III in
automotive specialising in heavy vehicle mobile equipment.
• Exploring options to further enhance the opportunities for
students to be involved in civil construction.
• Establishing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) involving
councils, employers, training providers and schools.
• Providing "Taste a Trade" opportunities.

The Trade Schools for the Future website and Facebook page have
been produced by the Department for Education and Child Development
for secondary school students, their parents and teachers.
Facebook users who 'like" the page can connect with others, earn
prizes, link to events or sites or even ask a question about the
program. The Facebook page helps link young people who have a
common interest in apprenticeships and traineeships, making it
easier for them to find and share information, and importantly,
connect with their peers.
