OresomeResources is a collaborative educational initiative supported by the minerals and energy industry in Australia. This collaboration is represented by the Queensland Resources Council, Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia, Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MCA Victoria Division, MCA Northern Territory Division, NSW Minerals Council, South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy, Tasmanian Minerals Council, Australian Coal Association and Australian Uranium Association.

These non-government organisations represent companies that have an interest in exploration, mining, minerals processing, gas and energy production.

To support teachers and students in the teaching and learning of the minerals and energy industry the collaboration has developed or sourced hundreds of educational resources.

National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce

 

The National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce [NRSET] was established in November 2009 to help secure the more than 70,000 additional skilled workers needed for major resources projects over the next five years.

On 15 March 2011, Senator the Hon Chris Evans, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations announced that the Australian Government has accepted all 31 recommendations presented in the National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce final report -'Resourcing the Future'.

RESOURCES & ENERGY PROGRAM

'Connecting students to resources and energy industry pathways,' the Resources and Energy Program (REP), is a response to the current and impending skills shortage for the expansion of the mining and energy generation sectors.
 
REP is an initiative of the Federal and State Governments that gives students practical training in trades where there is a critical skills shortage, such as engineering, boiler making, fitting, turning and welding, and automotive. Students work towards a Certificate III or higher as part of their School Based Apprenticeship.
 
Key Points:


• Is a member of the South Australian Resources Workforce Planning Council and the Regional Resources Workforce Planning Council.
• Established, enhanced and/or assisted in the maintenance of Industry Pathway Programs (IPP's) in schools, leading to apprenticeships/traineeships in the jobs in greatest demand.
• The strategy of the program is guided by the Resources and Energy Program Advisory Committee (REPAC) which includes the major players in mining and energy generation and allied industry, including suppliers.
• The REP with the Industry Skills Program (ISP) will be running a Careers Promotion Roadshow in May in Port Augusta and Whyalla, and in July in Port Pirie to demonstrate to students the types of jobs and the pathways in the different sectors.
• Working with industry to establish training centres in the Upper Spencer Gulf and Roxby Downs for Certificate III in automotive specialising in heavy vehicle mobile equipment.
• Exploring options to further enhance the opportunities for students to be involved in civil construction.
• Establishing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) involving councils, employers, training providers and schools.
• Providing "Taste a Trade" opportunities.

NEW WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGE SUPPORTING SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES

 

The Trade Schools for the Future website and Facebook page have been produced by the Department for Education and Child Development for secondary school students, their parents and teachers.

 

Facebook users who 'like" the page can connect with others, earn prizes, link to events or sites or even ask a question about the program. The Facebook page helps link young people who have a common interest in apprenticeships and traineeships, making it easier for them to find and share information, and importantly, connect with their peers.
