DRILLING PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

The Drilling Pre-Employment Pilot program is a unique training model, in an Australian first; it delivers partially qualified candidates to the Mining and Resources industry employment market.

The Drilling Pre Employment project (DPEP) was collaboration between research, government and industry organisations.  Specifically, RESA as the Project Manager facilitated, brokered and worked in conjunction with DET CRC as the sponsor, Boart Longyear and with state and federal government funding support and industry partners.

The pilot consisted of three courses; each using residentially-based training at Brukunga, a disused mine as well as CFS State Training Facility, in the Adelaide Hills.  The training was conducted in as near to real-life mine working environment as possible.  Brukunga was used to simulate a working mining environment; the pilot was conducted in this way to expose participants to the culture of the industry, including issues such as;

  • FIFO/DIDO,
  • Safety awareness,
  • Drug and alcohol policy enforcement,
  • Living away from home in shared accommodation,
  • Work rosters
  • Team impacts of continued in-work and after-hours socialisation.

All these are common when working in mines and remote area operations.

The program seeks a deeper 'cultural' understanding of a working mining environment.  As a result, it is expected that this will result in fewer LTI incidents and injuries as well as an easier transition to productive work and greater retention, as successful candidates are well informed and prepared for the working environment.  This model is not intended to make candidates expert drillers, rather is a work preparation program seeking to make them ready to work and providing a pathway into the industry.

To date 70% of successful candidates have achieved employment outcomes.
