Resources
Indigenous Leadership Program

|
New managers are emerging in remote locations across South
Australia's resource sector as participants of the Resources
Indigenous Leadership Program (RILP) are in the final
stages of the course, due to end June 30 2012.
The RILP was designed to support the development of Indigenous
leaders in the Mining and Resource sector, as well as refining
skills of existing supervisors to better support, coach and mentor
Indigenous Employees through team work, case studies, project work
and face to face seminars.

The 'learning to Lead' Certificate IV Frontline Management
program is being delivered by Australian Training Alliance
(ATA), project managed by Resources and Engineering Skills
Alliance (RESA).
Participants in Roxby Downs and Ceduna were nominated by their
employees as future leaders in their organisation, to participate
in the program to ensure they, and their companies are well
equipped for future challenges.
Over the 6 month period employees have developed a bank of
knowledge and skills to take additional responsibility of other
employees and lead operations for major resources and
infrastructure projects.
The critical attributing factor to the retention of Indigenous
employees is ensuring the right supervisor support is made
available. The key element of this program aims to increase the
provision of effective mentoring support in the workplace to reduce
turnover of Indigenous workforce.
Paul Miller is a Wet Concentrator Plant Operators at Iluka
Resources' Jacinth-Ambrosia mine near Ceduna in South
Australia.
Paul Miller says the time spent working on the project has
helped rekindle some skills he thought he had lost. "I can see
these skills are coming back but the training is also helping open
up new ideas for me and refreshed my outlook on work," he
said.
"I now look at the management of people differently and have
that greater level of understanding about leadership and just how
critical it is in the plant, day in day out."
"I can see how leaders think about strategy and planning
before they tackle a big job and I can definitely see how the
decisions managers make can be of a big benefit to the
Company."
