RESA Copper Strategy Submission

RESA supports the inclusion of Community Shared Value initiatives as part of the copper strategy- key programs targeted at local communities in copper regions that will ensure that some of the value of local mines is captured sustainably.  Key recommendations made by RESA include procurement initiatives that support the development of Small to Medium Enterprises, regional vocational skilling to improve local engagement with mines, and support for school education in key fields to keep the skills pipeline for key projects flowing.  RESA also encourages engagement with Indigenous SMEs in regions, so that the benefit of copper mining is truly shared by all stakeholders.

Another key recommendation by RESA is the development of the innovative ecosystem surrounding copper.  As part of the value creation process from the industry, support should be given to develop South Australia as a Copper Technology Centre of Excellence.  This includes support for universities and research institutions within South Australia, and also support for new and innovative businesses that will support the copper industry of the future.  As a forward looking state, we should support South Australian SMEs to develop technology to support copper mining in a wide range of emerging technologies, and the commercialisation of this technology should be centred here for maximum advantage.  To support these roles, the development of new skills in areas such as robotics, remote operations, nanotechnology, and data based optimisation should be encouraged.

As a key underpinning of the entire strategy, it will be important to move away from thinking about skills in isolation as a component part of the Copper Strategy and move to thinking about how skilled people are integral to every element of the strategy. To reach that million tonne target, copper mining will need to take lessons from other industries and foster shared knowledge and collaboration to drive change and business success, and South Australia is well placed to meet the challenge.
